Alcohol: There is NO amount or TYPE of alcohol that is considered safe for consumption during pregnancy. Alcohol should be avoided from the moment you start planning for a baby. Depending on the amount, timing and pattern of consumption, it can lead to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or other development disorders. If you have been drinking alcohol in any amount, stop now and avoid it till you stop breast feeding your baby.

Caffeine: We understand how you can’t start your day without that cup of your favourite coffee. But, you should limit your consumption of caffeine during pregnancy to 200mg a day. High levels of caffeine can result in low birth weight for babies. Too much caffeine can also cause a miscarriage.

Types of Fish: Tuna and oily fish should be consumed in limitation. Whereas, shark should be completely avoided. Also, hold your cravings for raw shellfish, it can cause food poisoning.

Unpasteurized Milk: Unpasteurized milk might contain a bacteria called calledlisteria, which can cause miscarriage. Listeria can cross the placenta and may infect the baby leading to life-threatening infection and/or blood poisoning. Always make sure the milk that you consume is well pasteurized.

The tricky tale of Papaya: You must have heard this from your mom and/or grandmum that papaya is a strict no-no during pregnancy. But do you know why? Well, the unripe and semi-ripe papayas are rich in latex which is known to trigger uterine contractions. Also, consuming papayas apparently brings on labour early. However, ripe papayas are rich in vitamins such as vitamin C and other wholesome nutrients that prevent the onset on pregnancy symptoms.

Vitamin A: Vitamin A, when consumed in high proportion during pregnancy may cause damage to the embryo. Foods containing large amounts of vitamin A include liver, and should be eaten on an occasional basis only. Unpasteurized cheese, blue-veined cheese and pâté are also not recommended because of the possible risk of transmission of infectious diseases such as Listeria.
